Opening Pembroke Dock to the next generation of builders
We were thrilled to welcome 25 students from the University of Wales Trinity Saint David (UWTSD) to our site at Pembroke Dock. The students are currently working towards their level 5 Higher National Diploma in Construction Management and Quantity Surveying.
Our site manager, Gavin Rossiter, gave a talk to the group on the history of the Pembroke Dock area and Sunderland Hangars. He explained the rationale for restoring the Hangars’ annexes, to create office spaces that will help support the growth of the marine renewables and floating offshore wind industry, and outlined the construction methods used. Gavin also covered the funding which was received from Swansea Bay City Deal and Welsh European Funding Office as part of the £60m Pembroke Dock Marine project that is supporting the renovation works.
Jack Jones, the Project lead Quantity Surveyor gave a talk about the work involved administering a NEC contract from a Quantity Surveying perspective.
Gavin, Jack and Claire Lawrence on behalf of the Port of Milford Haven, gave the students a site tour, answering their questions along the way.
The Pembroke Dock team have also recently received an ‘Excellent’ rating following the most recent Considerate Constructors inspection. With a project of this size, scope and local impact, it’s a great achievement for our teams and gives a great example for the visiting students of a site running with care and respect for the community, environment and each other.
We’ve invited the students back close to the completion of the project, so they can see the remarkable changes from the projects’ current state.
We are particularly happy to be able to work with UWTSD, as many of our people are graduates of their courses, including Jack Jones, who was funded by R&M Williams to complete his HNC, HND and BSc in Quantity Surveying since joining the company in 2013.
Right now, two of our Quantity Surveyors are attending UWTSD for their R&M funded BSc Quantity Surveying degrees.
