Lysaght Institute

R&M Williams Ltd were selected as the main contractor to deliver this £1.8m prestigious project to restore the Lysaght Institute to become a community hub and enterprise centre in the heart of Newport, South Wales.

Works consisted of the reconstruction of two of the external towers; reconstructed in ‘handmade’ bricks and stonework to match the existing. Internally, the building was stripped back and refurbished, the first floor ‘Ballroom’ was re-established as a function hall with what was once Europe’s largest sprung dance floor. At ground floor level, there is both office accommodation and exhibition space along with a Crèche. Externally, the building was re-roofed with Welsh slate and flat roofs overlaid with a single-ply membrane.

Lysaght Parc, of which Lysaght Institute is a focal point, was awarded the 2012 Welsh Housing Award for Developing and Regenerating Communities. R&M achieved a 2013 Building Excellence Award for Small Commercial Project (up to £5m) at the fifth annual Newport Construction Initiative (NCI) and Building Excellence Awards. We also received a ‘Highly Commended’ Award at the 2013 LABC Cymru Building Excellence Awards for the South Wales Region.
