Health & Safety

R&M Williams are committed to providing a safe working environment for our employees and subcontractors, whilst remaining vigilant of the general public at and near our sites.

We have developed and implemented a comprehensive Health & Safety policy with associated procedures, in line with all legislative requirements. Our Health & Safety Management System has been accredited to OHSAS18001 quality standard.

We are fully committed to continuous training for our staff. A full time Training Manager is employed to ensure all employees receive regular health and safety training. Our Managers and Supervisors are trained at least to the required standards, i.e. all Managers are holders of the SMSTS certificate and all Supervisors are holders of the SSS certificate. Our operatives are trained in Asbestos Awareness and Asbestos Removal (Minor Works).


At R&M Williams we care about the impact of our operations on the environment. We adhere to a strict Environmental Policy and take active measures in key areas such as waste, energy and fuel consumption.

R&M Williams are committed to sound environmental practices and our environmental management system has been accredited to ISO14001 quality standard.

Working in partnership with our Supply Chain Partners, we ensure that all our waste is separated prior to disposal, and then recycled. We are working in conjunction with all environmental partners to achieve a zero landfill by 2020. We also promote through the company the importance of the reduction of energy consumption and materials harmful to the environment both in our offices and on our sites.

H&S Training

R&M Williams is committed to a well-planned and structured training programme. We employ a full time Health & Safety and Training Manager who ensures that all staff are provided with an equal opportunity for any training they require and to identify all future training needs.

Most of our training is health and safety based and all our staff have received training suitable to the type of work they are undertaking with regular Toolbox Talks carried our both on site and at our head office by our safety manager and supervisors.
As a minimum requirement our Site Managers must have;

  • 5 day SMSTS
  • CSCS Card Manager Level
  • Asbestos Awareness

As a minimum requirement our Supervisors/Foremen must have;

  • SSS
  • CSCS Card Supervisor Level
  • Asbestos Awareness

As a minimum requirement our Operatives must have;

  • CSCS card
  • Asbestos Awareness

Our Training Manager tailors individual training plans for each member of staff involved on any contract, consistently liaising with the Contract Manager to ensure that any courses are programmed so as not to clash with scheduled works. He ensures that each member of the team receives all relevant industry approved training, e.g. asbestos awareness (UKATA affiliated), first aid, SMSTS (Site Management Safety Training), SSS (Site Supervisor Safety), CSCS, PASMA , MEWPS (Mobile elevating work platforms). R&M will also ensure that all training is updated/refreshed at regular intervals. All training is recorded and is organised between operatives e.g. a skilled plumber may be partnered with a skilled carpenter, both learning skills and helping towards taking formal qualifications and becoming multi-skilled.

We are constantly expanding our training to assist us in working competently in other areas of our industry and any increase in the workforce due to new contract work will reflect this with all training needs identified and addressed with any new employees at the earliest opportunity.

Our Company training plan includes;

  • People based training – including training in our values, customer service training and equality and diversity
  • Role based training – a range of training in non-trade specific skills covering areas such as IT, health and safety, apprenticeships and other qualifications
  • Trade based training – formal training geared to specific trades and areas of expertise leading to City and Guilds, NVQ, ONC, HND qualifications
  • Management and Leadership – Tailored programmes to help current and future managers and supervisors

We utilise Human Resources software to collate information regarding every employee’s qualifications and training needs. This software allows us to implement a training programme so that we can ensure that each employee is suitably qualified for their role and the qualifications they currently hold are up to date.

Every employee has an annual appraisal with their manager during which, their performance will be reviewed and any training requirements identified.

Our training and development manager works within the framework of Investors in People, with a view to long term career development. By investing in this continuous training programme we are also able to offer better pay and conditions, leading to a happier, healthier and more productive workforce who is able to deliver works on time, and to a better standard. This ultimately leads to more client satisfaction and profitability for all.

We are also very active in promoting the ‘Qualifying the workforce scheme’ and work closely with CITB on a range of issues. All operatives are encouraged to request further training they feel would assist them in their work.

We have trained over 100 employees to be multi skilled over recent years, we have found this method of developing skills highly successful as we are left with motivated, highly skilled operatives who have a better understanding of the tasks ahead and a better quality end product.
