Urban Village Swansea – High Street

We constructed a 3-storey steel frame building, with space for three retail units on the ground floor and 27 affordable housing flats on levels 1 to 3. The building finish had feature masonry walls to the front elevation and rain screen cladding to the rear.

We built the structure in challenging conditions – within a live, bustling environment at 228-230 High St Swansea, on behalf of Coastal Housing Group, and as part of the larger Urban Village project.

Part of the scheme was to re-construct the Grade II listed Bush public house, matching its original façade features such as the existing render detailing, box sash windows, pennant stone window sills, cornice features all of which were closely monitored by the appointed listed buildings architect and local planner.

With the requirement to achieve BREEAM Excellent & EPC A, the internal partitions & SFS required high thermal performance and acoustics. The apartments were serviced with Gas boilers and roof mounted Photovoltaic panels supported the green credentials of the units.

Due to the close vicinity of the buried old town walls the project was subject to an archaeological watching brief, and ground excavations works were monitored by the appointed archaeologist. Access to the site was created at the rear from a ramp constructed out of the excavations for pad foundations and drainage.

Legacy

The project was completed successfully and to a very high standard, and we received recognition from:

The Considerate Constructors Scheme – Silver award

LABC – won the Construction Excellence award at local and national levels

Following completion of the High Street scheme to BREEAM Excellent standard, we successfully obtained negotiated The Strand Quarter residential Tower, continuing our work in the Swansea area.
