Hereford A&E

We delivered the refurbishment of the Hereford Hospital A&E department during the hight of the COVID19 pandemic, on behalf of Sodexo, working for the Wye Valley Health Board Trust.

This was a multi-phase redevelopment of various sections of the A&E department, including the demolition of admin offices in order to create a new and greatly needed Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC) unit, the formation of new sister welfare areas and mental health cubicle.

Additionally we redeveloped their emergency paediatrics area which entailed the demolition of the existing reception and clinical rooms to form the new space.

The biggest challenges firstly were:

  • Having to work in emergency wards with confirmed covid cases which put a big emphasis on safety and covid compliance
  • Completing all works were completed in either ‘live environments’ around patients and public, or immediately adjacent to live areas
  • Maintaining a live A&E reception while constructing the new one within the centre

In addition to this, once we finished the initial strip-out, we had to complete each area getting it right-first-time – without time for quality benchmarking. Reception, SDEC, Paediatrics, Fit to Sit, Staff bases, and Cubicles had to be completed in their entirety and opened up for use to free up the next area. This gave us 20 individual work areas all on short term programmes, which required extremely close coordination among our trades and subcontractors, to get everything done while still socially distancing.
