Empire House Grade II Listed

Refurbishment of the Grade II Listed Empire House building into 38 luxury apartments, with an additional two storey rear and upper extension over 8 storeys for Cardiff Bay Developments Ltd.

Works included the renovation/replacement of existing timber windows and roof to the existing building, the construction of a 2-storey penthouse on existing roof as well provision of new partitions, doors, floor, wall and ceiling finishes and new mechanical and electrical services including new lift.

The project had three separate work streams:

  • Eight-storey rear extension – steel frame and traditional cavity wall brick and block construction with new Aluminium double glazed windows
  • Grade II listed refurbishment at the front – restoration and replacement of sash windows, masonry and stone repairs, restoring feature wall panelling and treating for fire prevention. We retained the existing listed lift surround of fine mesh and wrought ironwork and removed existing lift, to allow installation of new visible lift frame and partially glazed lift car, giving visibility front and rear whilst travelling in the car
  • Independent two storey structure at roof level – a hybrid of structural steelwork and timber clad in zinc to create two duplex Penthouse apartments

The refurbishment internal finish was high quality, with an ‘executive’ fit-out to inclusive of furniture, fixtures and white goods.
